COLUMBUS RIVER DRAGONS PUTTING ON TWO NETURAL SITE GAMES IN ATHENS

Columbus, GA – The Columbus River Dragons in partnership with The Classic Center are proud to announce that two neutral site games in the 2019-20 Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL) season will be played in Athens, Georgia at the Akins Ford Arena at The Classic Center.

FPHL games 108 (Danville vs. Columbus) and 132 (Port Huron vs. Columbus) will be played on December 29 and January 12 respectively with a 4:05 p.m. puck drop. Each game will be the third of a 3-in-3 weekend set between the two teams, with the previous two games being played at the Columbus Civic Center.

The Akins Ford Arena is home to the University of Georgia club hockey team and seats 2,000 for ice hockey. Director of Arena and Ancillary Services Danny Bryant is excited about the opportunities coming to Athens.

“We are very excited to welcome the Columbus River Dragons and the Federal Prospects Hockey League to Athens and the Akins Ford Arena” Bryant said. “We believe this will be an exciting opportunity for our current UGA Ice Dawgs fans to experience a professional hockey game in addition to bringing new fans to Athens.”

River Dragons President and General Manager Scott Brand said, “We look forward to working with UGA and youth hockey to help bring new fans to The Classic Center and we hope these two games will help spark increased interest in their program.” He added that “any chance we have to expose our brand of hockey to a new market is exciting. We know that given the opportunity, Athens area hockey fans will enjoy our games.”

Tickets for the two games will go on sale September 6 and will be between $12-$15 for single game tickets with a bundle pack for both games available starting as low as $20. Patrons are also invited to stay for post-game activities involving River Dragons players.

As the FPHL continues to expand its footprint south, River Dragons management sees these games as an opportunity to expose the league’s product in other markets that are already very familiar with hockey.

“We appreciate the partnership with The Classic Center in Athens” Brand said. “These two games will allow us to showcase our league and provide hockey fans in Eastern Georgia a chance to see professional hockey.”

The Classic Center Box Office can be reached at 706.357.4444 and is located at 300 N Thomas Street in Downtown Athens.
